Week 13: Cyber Terrorism

Cyber terrorism, an issue that is becoming more and more prevalent as we enter the cyber realm where people are staying connecting, doing business, communicating, networking, and doing almost all activities of the day through the internet. Terrorism, defined, is the use of violence or threats to intimidate or persuade that produces fear and terror in an individual to produce a result in the favor of the person harassing for their wants (Dictionary.com). Cyber Terrorism is a fact and an issue that is becoming more of an issue every day. CyberTerrorism is an act that produces harm or fear to individuals though the hacking or breaking in to political, social, business, or any network in the cyber world where information is stolen for the means of breaking doing infrastructures. I think that CyberTerroism is a major issue and that if hackers can successful break into these networks then they can steal identities, government plans, top-secret information and can cost lives. With more and more people basing their lives off of the internet and how people entrust the cyber world with all of their personal, business, and social information CyberTerrorism is a serious and very real situation.

Week 12: Choir

For the Choir project I am in group 5. This group is in charge of gathering more complaints for the complaint choir to sing about. I took it apon my self to go out side of the tempe region to gather more diverse complaints and differernt ones for us to sing about. I gathered information from all over the city through friends, family, my job, the region where I live and just random people. This is just a work in progess data set and will be gathering more information by our class tuesday. It is still a work in progress and will be gathering much more complaints for the class.

As discussed in class this week China’s control over their internet is very strict to say the least when you are comparing it to how the Unites States control their internet. One fact that amazes me is how they control the information that can be processed and given out to the public when dealing with the news. I think that this makes it very difficult for people to get another side of stories that they hear because there is such a limited amount of networks and people that are allowed to give the news. So, people are really only getting one side of the story and some people will never know what is going on or hear a different view. This brings up a huge issue, I think, of people not ever getting their voice heard at all. The major problem in China is: Are they people’s voice being drowned out by the government? I think, yes. The way that a government can truly function and function in the best way is by getting the citizens of that country’s voice heard and China’s is failing in this area for the most part I think. They are controlling what is going on, but I think it is going a little too far.

Week 9: Cultural differences and IT

Cultural aspects, changes, and differences shape and change the use of information technology all around us because with these changes we will see and use the technology in different ways. We can see this through how people in different countries are using the internet to protest and to get their voices heard through information technology to create change. The only way, for the most part, that they can get people involved is through information technology because they are distant from their surrounding world. An example of this is seen through The Zapatista. These people use information technology to create social and economical change for the better in their society. On a different aspect the culture of your country changes how people use information technology socially, through business, and just in general. In the United States because it is such a cyber community now mostly everyone, including me, use information technology to communicate and do business for social networking, education such as this class, and for more countless ways that makes our world go round. Every society uses information technology, but in a slightly different way. There is no question about it that now in our day and age without our information technology cultures would not be able to function as well and as easily with each other.

In our country today we enjoy certain rights to get the word of the people out for all to hear by the use of information technology. This information technology is our internet and the venue that some people choose to express this out to freedom of speech is through the popular internet site of www.youtube.com. The political cartoon that I will be discussing is title “The Economy 2009: The Humor and President Obama.” The publishers of this cartoon have taken the light hearted route of a cartoon to turn it into something of just the opposite. They are taking a devastating turn of an events of our economy and made it to be somewhat as some would say humorous and light hearted by using cartoons and comic strips. Some of this major issues that have been brought up in this political cartoon is the stock market with its downfalls, the issue with the value of the dollar, the gas crisis with its rise and fall, the unemployment problems, and issues with banks with money and getting a loan. This cartoon brings up some of the major issues in the past year. It is does not fully explain, but touches on them to get people involved. Through technology and knowledge the publisher of this political cartoon has found a way to produce a quite clear way to inform the masses about what is going on in our world with a different spin. I think it is very intelligent because it informs, gets people thinking, it is not dry and it is interesting. This is a venue that get people interested and involved that is reaching out to a new demographic.

Week 4: The Diebold Voting Machine

For week four I was drawn to the case of the Diebold Voting machine in regards to the Networked Public sphere. In the case of the Diebold Voting machine this issue of public debate and voting was brought up. The electronic voting machines were not representing the online community of voters. This case was should a great issue because it showed people how they can fight back. It was the start of a revolution of people getting their voice heard in the cyber world. In this new age of technology the “sphere” or realm of possibilities for people to voice their opinions has moved to a virtual world. The internet has brought about a “new public sphere” in which people to communicate together as a whole no matter where they are located. This new sphere has created a what is referred to as a “global village.” It is in the new global village or community that the issue of the Diebold Voting machine has stirred up issues. The Diebold Voting machine is causing people to not be represented in their government. This act violates the global village which the government has said that the Communications Decency Act backs up. It states that the Internet must get the highest regards of protection under the government. Even though the Internet is a fairly new venue of governance compared to most it still must be regarded with the up most best protection because it is dealing with the protection, voice, and liberty of the people.
